Dating Ukrainian Women: Holidays, Traditions and Gifts

Dating Ukrainian Women: Holidays, Traditions and Gifts

1 February 20268 min read

You managed to get a date, you got through the first meetings, and maybe you are already a couple. Suddenly March or December comes, and there is friction. Why? Because the calendar of holidays and the weight that beautiful Ukrainian women attach to them differs from what we are used to in the UK. Here is your guide on how not to make a faux pas and score points with knowledge of traditions.

In the UK, International Women's Day is acknowledged but often treated lightly. In Ukraine (and generally in the East), it is absolutely the most important secular holiday of the year for every woman. It is a day full of splendour celebrating femininity.

What does she expect?
A simple text message is not enough. She expects a beautiful bouquet, a small gift, and often a romantic dinner. If you ignore March 8th, your chosen one will feel unimportant and unloved. It is the perfect moment to show that she is your queen.

Christmas – Twice a year?

The Christmas situation is interesting. Traditionally in Ukraine (according to the Julian calendar), Christmas was celebrated on January 7th. However, recently Ukraine has officially moved to the New Julian calendar (December 25th) to align with Europe.

What does this mean for you? That you might have a double celebration! Many families cultivate traditions, so Christmas dinner in December with your family and perhaps a second celebration or adhering to Orthodox traditions in January is a common scenario. It is a wonderful opportunity to try Kutia (a traditional grain dish) and meet her parents.

Birthdays vs Name Days

In some European countries, Name Days are popular. In Ukraine, they celebrate primarily Birthdays. They are usually celebrated more lavishly than here. Forgetting a birthday in their dating culture is a huge negative point.

Gifts – what to buy a Ukrainian woman?

Men often Google: "gift for a Ukrainian woman". Do they have specific requirements? Women from the East are usually very practical, but they love aesthetics.

  • Jewellery: Always a safe and welcome choice. It doesn't have to be expensive diamonds, but it should be tasteful.
  • Cosmetics/Perfume: Ukrainian women take great care of their beauty (we wrote about this in the article on Ukrainian mentality). A high-quality set of cosmetics is a hit.
  • Flowers: Remember the odd number rule! It is a universal addition to any gift.

New Year and "Old New Year"

New Year's Eve in Ukraine is celebrated very solemnly – this is when, similar to our Christmas, gifts are often exchanged. An interesting fact is the so-called "Old New Year" (Malanka) celebrated on the night of January 13-14. It is a time of fun, fortune-telling, and rich tables. If you surprise her with knowledge about Malanka, you will certainly impress her with respect for her culture.

Summary

In a relationship with a woman from another culture, the calendar becomes richer. Do not treat it as a duty, but as an adventure. Celebrating British and Ukrainian holidays together is the best way to build a bond. And if you are still looking for the one with whom you could spend the upcoming holidays – you know where to look!
